Earlier this year, author Ernst Cline, known for his work on “Ready Player One,” announced the launch of his metaverse company, Readyverse Studios. This announcement was met with irony, considering Cline’s novel explores a dystopian world where people seek solace in a metaverse-like gaming environment. As our own world faces increasing challenges, Cline’s company has teased OPEN, a gaming experience offering digital escapism.

During the SXSW event in Austin, Texas, Cline shared Readyverse Studios’ plans, including a sneak peek at their new game, OPEN. Described as “the first genre-defining AAA metaverse gaming experience, interoperable with top-tier IP through web3 tech,” OPEN is a multi-biome, multi-IP, multi-mode battle royale game in development for PC and next-gen platforms.

Readyverse Studios is proud to collaborate with Walker Labs, bringing together a team of developers from Epic Games, DICE, Microsoft, PlayStation, Mojang, Remedy, Ubisoft, Lucasfilm, Electronic Arts, and more to create OPEN. This collaboration aims to build a triple-A, MMO open metaverse experience that integrates iconic IP in an unprecedented manner.

OPEN promises to be a cross-platform game, playable on both computers and AR/VR headsets. The “multi-IP” aspect hints at future integrations of various franchises into the gameplay. Venture Beat, reporting on the game’s announcement, mentions that OPEN’s “immersive multiverse will be filled with nostalgia-infused biomes featuring characters and cultural legends across iconic franchises.”
